World Information
Sansa comes from a medieval, fantasy world. It is divided into two continents, Westeros and Essos. She is from specifically the North in Westeros. It is a feudal-like society wherein most of the plot is centered around the power that lords and kings have and their ability to take it from others, most often talked about like it is a "game". Most think it is based off of medieval England with the power struggle similar to War of the Roses.
What is important in this world is how everything is still affecting the current story. The books open on the Starks in the year 298 after Aegon's Landing. This world is full of history from the creatures that existed thousands of years ago called the Children of the Forest to the dragons that are reborn through Daenerys Targaryen who is a descendant of Aegon.
Westeros was once a group of kingdoms until Aegon came with his dragons from Essos and took over with his dragons, something the west hadn't seen, yet. But by the time the story starts, the dragons are believed to be dead. The main characters, the Starks, have been head of the North for thousands of years, and their culture is steeped in age (though not quite as much as the Crannogmen of the Neck). Each kingdom has its own lord, and the power struggle begins once again after the king dies though it is easy to see how the wheels have been turning long before Robert Baratheon died.
There is also the land above the Wall, ends where the king rules, as well as Essos. Cities in Essos are more like city states or are rules from a council, something more democratic. Their culture is more Eastern medieval though there is still very much a presence of the supernatural. The religion of the Lord of Light and the Faceless men are more previlent here, though Westeros has more of it than one would think.
As far as other religions, there are three others. The Old Gods are what the Children of the Forest.
